##  EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR DRIVING IN ICELAND



This is BY FAR the best way to experience all that Iceland has to offer. The Ring Road or Route 1 of Iceland is 1,332 kilometers. This road will take you around the full circle around the country. If you’ve got a week or more, it’s definitely doable! To give you an idea of what this will be like, in just one hour you could drive past waterfalls, black sand beaches, and cascading mountainsides. You never know what will be around each turn in Iceland!

**DRIVING IN ICELAND**
While there is public transportation in Iceland the best way to get out and explore the country is by renting a car. Renting a car is the easiest and best option for getting around the country. You will have the freedom to spend as much time at the beautiful sights as you want. Venture off the plan when you find a new waterfall. Stop as often as you want to take pictures of all the amazing things you are seeing out your window. You will have all the freedom to explore Iceland how you want with a rental car.

Before you book your rental car read on for all the information you need to know:

**1) WHERE TO RENT A CAR IN ICELAND?**
There are several car rental companies to rent from in Iceland. You can pick up your rental car in locations such as Keflavik Airport, downtown Reykjavik, and Reykjavik Airport. To rent a car you will need a credit card and a driver’s license in English, or with an official translation. Most cars are manuals if you want an automatic to be sure to request it.

The price for renting a car ranges from $35 to $145 USD per day for a small vehicle. For a large vehicle, the price ranges from $55 USD to $330 USD per day. During the summer months, rental cars book up quickly so be sure to reserve your car as soon as possible.

 

**2) WHAT SIDE OF THE ROAD DO YOU DRIVE ON IN ICELAND?**
In Iceland, you drive on the right-hand side of the road.

 

**3) HOW FAST CAN YOU DRIVE IN ICELAND?**
The general speed limit is between 30-50 km/hour in populated areas. On paved roads, it is 90 km/hour and 80 km/hour on gravel roads in rural areas. There are cameras located all over the country monitoring the speed, so even if you think you’re out in the middle of nowhere and speeding is no problem please keep the speed limit in mind.

 

**4) HOW MUCH IS GAS IN ICELAND?**
Gas is quite expensive in Iceland. Be prepared to pay around $5.50 USD per gallon. The gas stations are self-service, however, you can often find an attendant on hand if you need assistance. When driving around the countryside be sure to fuel up whenever you can. The gas stations can be few and far between so better to be safe than run out of gas. Most gas stations are open from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm.

 

**5) DO YOU NEED TO HAVE A 4WD TO GET AROUND ICELAND?**
This question depends on where you plan on driving, and the time of the year you are visiting. If you are planning on driving along the paved ring road during the summer then you do not need to worry about getting a 4WD vehicle.

During the winter having a 4WD vehicle is a safer option when driving in the winter conditions. This is not a requirement, but it could give you peace of mind when driving on icy roads.

If you are planning on driving on any F-roads (mountain roads) then you will need a 4WD. A fair warning, all rental cars will warn against driving off the road. It can be dangerous for you and the vehicle. If you violate this rule and the company finds damage there can be a hefty fine.

**6) HOW OLD DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO RENT A CAR**?
The minimum age for renting a car in Iceland is 20 years old. If you plan on renting a 4WD  or minibus the age requirement is 23 years old.

 

**7) SHOULD YOU GET THE EXTRA CAR INSURANCE?**
Purchasing extra insurance is always a good idea if you are planning on driving while traveling. You never know what can happen and it is better to be protected than  risk it. The roads in Iceland can be a bit harsh, particularly if you are planning on driving along any gravel roads. In addition, there is ash and sand around the country that can do damage to the car. With so many unknown natural elements in Iceland that can do damage to the car, it is better to be safe and get extra insurance.

 

**8) IS DRIVING DURING THE WINTER SAFE?**
When visiting Iceland during the winter it is important to take extra caution while driving. The conditions can be dangerous and unpredictable so please only drive if you have experience in such conditions. For more information on driving in Iceland in the winter check out this post.

 

**9) CAN I PULL OFF ANYWHERE ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO TAKE PICTURES?**
The short answer, not exactly. Keep in mind that the road you are stopping on is probably the main road. While there is not much traffic a car can come flying by at any minute. Make safety for yourself and other drivers a priority. Find a safe area to park that has your car off completely off the road.

**10) WHAT TYPES OF ROADS ARE THERE IN ICELAND?**
On your Iceland road trip, you will come across a few different types of roads. There is the main ring road that takes you around Iceland. Narrow gravel roads down around the fjörds. And bumpy mountain roads to take you back into the highlands.

 

**Here is a quick breakdown of the different types of roads you can expect in Iceland:**

**Paved Roads **–You will find paved roads in the towns around Iceland. Eighty percent of the ring road around the country is paved. These roads are fairly well maintained but can have rough conditions, particularly in the winter.

 

**Gravel Roads **– Chances are you will likely come across gravel roads while driving in Iceland. There will be a sign indicating that the road will be changing from paved to gravel. Enter onto the gravel road slowly as there can be loose rocks on the road. Keep in mind the speed limit on these roads is 80 km/hour. Drive with caution as there can be loose rocks making it easy to lose control if going too fast.

 

**F Roads **–The mountain roads in Iceland are called F roads. To drive on these roads you will need a 4WD vehicle. The F roads are typically open from the beginning of June to the end of September. Always check the conditions before driving on the F roads and know exactly where you will go and what you will come across.

 
**Single Lane Bridges**– Along the ring road, you will come across many single-lane bridges. These bridges will be marked by a sign before reaching them. The general rule of these bridges is that the car closer to the bridge has the right of way. Always slow down and assess the situation and what the other car is going to do before crossing.

**OTHER TRANSPORTATION IN ICELAND**
When planning your trip to Iceland be ready to not have trained to count on to quickly take you from one waterfall to the next. And your favorite Uber app, there will be no need to open that in Iceland. While the public transportation options are limited they will do the trick if you aren’t planning on renting a car.

 

**Here are the sources of transportation you can count on while in Iceland:**

**Public Buses **–The main bus system in Iceland is calledStrætó. They have bus routes all around the country. You can find a handy travel planner on their website for you to plan your trips. Tickets are $4 USD for a single ride and can be purchased on the bus or at select locations listed here. They also have an app that can be downloaded here. The app allows you to search for bus routes as well as purchase tickets.

For a bit more freedom and more routes around the country check out Iceland on Your Own. This option is a more flexible way to schedule your trip around Iceland when relying on the bus.

 

**Taxi–**There are several 24/7 taxi companies in Reykjavik. The most popular one is Hreyfill who you can call for a taxi anytime at +354 588 5522.  Taxis are very expensive in Iceland, be prepared to pay around $2.75 USD per 1 km. Some companies offer taxis for hire for a day of sightseeing. In the smaller towns around Iceland taxis aren’t as common so do not plan on relying on them as your main source of transportation.

 

**Bicycle**– While in one of Iceland’s cities renting a bicycle is a fun option for getting around town. The cities in Iceland are small making them very walkable and quick to ride a bike from place to place. You can rent a bike in Reykjavik for $40 USD per day.

**EXTRA DRIVING TIPS**
While you won’t have to worry about getting stuck in traffic jams in Iceland there are a few tips to keep in mind.

- Watch for animals crossing the road. Especially sheep. These cute sheep you will see, are not exactly smart. If you keep driving towards them they have a tendency to dash in front of the car. If you do encounter a sheep while driving take it nice and slow as you ease past them.

- The Icelandic wind is no joke when it is strong, it is STRONG. On those windy days take extra care when opening your car doors. The wind can throw your door open if you do not hold on to it.

- While in Reykjavik keep in mind that you do have to pay to park around the city. There will be a box on the street to pay for it. Once you have paid you need to place the ticket back inside your car. Fees depend on the zone you are parking in and range from $1 USD per hour to $2.25 USD per hour.

- The nature you will see on your road trip will have you stopping constantly to take pictures. This is totally understandable, but be aware of where you are parking your car. Do not pull off on the road to take pictures. This is dangerous for yourself and other drivers. Instead, find a place with a pull-off to park your car and safely get your pictures. There are many pull-off locations around the country so please use them.
 

*Keep in mind these options are best for those planning to stay in the city. If you want to get out and explore more of the countryside renting a car may be the better option.

 
 
*Note: It is illegal to drive off roads in Iceland. Not only does it seriously damage nature, but if caught you will be fined a large sum.*

Prior to Iceland, I didn’t quite understand the dark (a little spooky) style/genre or like it much to be honest. It wasn’t until I was in the car on a rainy afternoon driving along the South Coast of Iceland where I turned on Sigur Ros and listened with an open mind. Never in my life has music created such a profound understanding of each song’s roots and narrative. The music fits flawlessly with the dramatic landscape and moody weather that encases nature. If you want a preview of what I’m talking about, Sigur Rós drove the Ring Road while playing his music the entire way with a camera on his dashboard. Maybe this will help you understand what I mean! It’s pretty neat!

**EXPLORE WATERFALLS IN ICELAND**
Waterfalls are some of the most recognizable features of Iceland. With frequent snowfall and expansive glaciers, it’s not surprising that the country is alive with rivers, lakes, ponds, and streams. But indeed it’s Iceland’s waterfalls that are the true jewels of the landscape. Here are our top 10 roundups of the most epic waterfalls in Iceland.



**1. GULLFOSS**
Most noteworthy of all is Gullfoss, closest to Reykjavik. As one of three stops on the Golden Circle, Gullfoss remains the most popular waterfall in Iceland. Its power comes from the mighty Hvíta river, from the roots of the great glacier Langjökull. It travels long and far, to plunge down in two tiers into the narrow Hvitargljufur gorge. Gullfoss (“golden waterfall”) is an emblem of Iceland and appears in many Icelandic paintings and folktales. One local story tells the tale of Sigríður Tómasdóttir, the daughter of a landowner in the early 20th century. She was an environmental activist who struggled to save the waterfalls from exploitation. Perhaps because of her efforts, today it is under government-protected status.

**2. DETTIFOSS**
Located in the northern highlands not far from Lake Mývatn, Dettifoss is a marvel to see. It’s accessible by a long drive and a short hike from Akureyri. Dettifoss is the certainly most powerful waterfall in Europe, a veritable Northern Niagara. It boasts an average flow of 193 m3/s (in other words, around 6816 ft3/s). That’s more than 3 million US gallons per minute! The water originates from the massive Vatnajökull ice cap to the south and travels a great distance. Brownish rainfall and glacial silt tumble together into the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river for miles. Finally, the water makes it to Dettifoss, to drop down around 144 feet into the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. The thunderous din is enough to set your teeth on edge. Film buffs will recognize the falls as the location of a scene in the 2012 film Prometheus.

**3. GOÐAFOSS**
Goðafoss is a quiet yet alluring fall right on the Ring Road on the way east to Akureyri. It plays an important role in Icelandic history. In the year 999, the government debated whether to accept Old Norse paganism or Christianity as the official religion. The decision ultimately fell to Lawspeaker Þorgeir Þorkelsson, who spent one restless night wrestling with the choice. At dawn, he announced that from that day forth, Icelanders would be Christian. He returned to his farm and threw his idols of the Norse gods over into the nearby rapids. Consequently, today the falls are known as the “Waterfall of the Gods.”

**4. SELFOSS**
While not as dramatic as its sisters, Selfoss is rather beautiful in its own way. This wide and powerful waterfall is located in the north, another runoff from the river Jökulsá á Fjöllum. It is just a few hundred meters downstream of its cousin, the powerful Dettifoss. Though not particularly tall (only around 36 feet), it stretches wide like a horseshoe. These falls are particularly gorgeous in winter when the icy hand of winter gives birth to icicles and frozen droplet

**5. HRAUNFOSSAR**
The beautiful cascades of Hraunfossar are a photogenic series of waterfalls in western Iceland. The name Hraunfossar means literally “lava falls.” This is due to the way the water tumbles out over almost 3000 feet of lava! To reach the falls, drive 34 miles from Borgarnes. In summer the water is particularly forceful. To be sure, though–no matter which season you go, it’s guaranteed to be stunning.

**6. SKOGAFOSS**
Skogafoss is just a short stop on the Ring Road and tends to draw major crowds. First of all, its classic rectangular body embodies the ideal waterfall. This is exactly what people think of with the word waterfall. Secondly, it’s a simple left turn off the main highway. Its convenient location and noteworthy beauty certainly make it attractive to photographers. On sunny days, you can usually count on a single or double rainbow! Folk legend recounts how the VikingÞrasi Þórólfsson reportedly buried a treasure chest in a cave behind the falls. Apparently, it is still hidden there. One day, a local boy stumbled on a glittering ring at the base of the waterfall. The ring was later melted and the gold embedded into the church door of nearby Skogar. Have a peek around–who knows, maybe you’ll find the chest.

**7. SVARTIFOSS**
Next, we come to Svartifoss, which while more inaccessible, is, in fact, one of the most photographed of Icelandic waterfalls. The “black waterfall” is aptly named, as its water tumbles out over a curtain of jet-black basalt columns. If you go hunting for these falls, make sure you bring your hiking gear. It requires some minor trekking into Vatnajökull National Park to reach. But it’s all worth it to see it, the bleached white water against the sharp edges of black rock. Svartifoss’ charming hexagonal corbels have served as inspiration for the design of the Hallgrímskirkja church in Reykjavik.

**8. SELJALANDSFOSS**
Another on the Southern Ring Road, Seljalandsfoss is probably one of the more popular waterfalls in Iceland. It is narrow and tall, with a drop of around 206 feet. A unique aspect of these falls is that you can walk behind them! Not surprisingly, it’s been the setting for many photographs and music videos, including one by Justin Bieber.

**9. DYNJANDI**
The jewel of the West Fjords, this impressive waterfall dips down 330 feet. “Dynjandi” means, aptly enough, “thunderous” or “resounding.” It courses down with impressive energy from Lake Eyjavatn and pours over the cliff-face like a bridal veil. Moss-colored slopes and nearby bird nests attract many an admirer. Its other name, Fjallfoss (“mountain falls”) seems to speak to its curtain-like shape. The waterfall has seven tiers in all, each with a name, which lends a special “wedding cake” quality to the water. Visitors can walk up on the side of the falls, but bring your hiking boots as they can be slippery.

**10. BRUARFOSS**
Finally, there is Bruarfoss, a truly hidden gem located in a cottage area just beyond the Golden Circle region. If you Google Bruarfoss, you’re most likely to find blogs trying to explain where the heck the falls are located, like I said – a truly hidden gem. Bruarfoss is a series of waterfalls that fall into a deeper channel turning the color of the water to a vibrant blue, especially on a sunny day. This waterfall is definitely less traveled to, but absolutely worth the visit. It might even be our favorite of all!

# CHRISTMAS IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT IN ICELAND… MEET THE YULE LADS!
 

Christmas is alive and well in Iceland, steeped in folklore and a dash of old myths. A few notable characters peek their heads about come Christmas season, but none so notable that the **Yule Lads.**

The Yule Lads are **Iceland’s answer to Santa**—but unlike other traditions, there’s not just one Santa, but thirteen!

 


####  THIRTEEN YULE LADS
The Lads are **thirteen mischievous troublemakers **who cause havoc in the 13 nights leading up to Christmas. Parents used to tell stories of them to children as a way to encourage good behavior. **Their transgressions are usually benign**, such as stealing sausages or licking spoons from unsuspecting humans. But, once upon a time, they used to be much worse—terrible trolls who terrorized children! It wasn’t until 1746, when law prohibited parents from scaring their kids, that the stories transformed them into **(relatively harmless) mischief-makers** that we know and love today.

 
#### LEGENDS & FOLKLORE
Several legends surround the Yule Lads. Some say they are descended from elves or hidden folk. Others say they are children of Eve or fallen angels. The most popular story, though, is that they are the **sons of the ogress Grýla**. When it’s not Christmastime, the whole family lives together in Dimmuborgir near Lake Myvatn in North Iceland.

Old Christmas folklore details the horror of Grýla, the Lads’ mother, who boils naughty children alive. This terrible ogress is a **part troll and part beast**, and sometimes possesses horns and hooves. She kidnaps children in a sack and takes them home to devour them—except if they are good children, then she’s powerless in the face of their innocence. Grýladates back to the 13th century; she was a nature troll before she became associated with Christmas in the 17th century. There is also the **black Christmas Cat**, who eats anyone not wearing at least one new piece of clothing on Christmas Eve.

#### ORIGIN STORY
Though it’s not known how the tradition of 13 Yule Lads started, it may date back to **pagan times**. Young and celebrating Icelanders dressed up in masks and visited all the farms come Christmas. As days grew darker and smothered in snow, more people stayed near the home. They might have whispered each other tales over a hearth fire, about spirits deep in the woods and the mountains. Tales of fearsome natural spirits eventually became tales of **supernatural tricksters.**

Why the number thirteen? Here we have a theory from Christian Iceland. It’s unknown, but speculation surrounds the Julian Calendar. In the Enlightenment period, the calendar showed the winter solstice as December 13, which is a few days off from the proper date December 21. The answer was to **remove thirteen days **off the calendar. People were now forced to celebrate the midwinter festival on a different date. The theory is that people eventually grew to honor all the days between their old winter solstice and their new Christmas.



#### MISCHIEF & MAYHEM
The Yule Lads cause all sorts of mischief and usually **get blamed for troubles** in December. Most notorious is the break-in of Bæjarins Beztu Hot Dog Cart, which is burglarized every few years and has a few hundred sausages stolen (thanks to the Lad called Sausage Swiper).

They begin to arrive among humans **on December 12,** when Sheep-Cote Clod descends from the mountains. Each successive night, a new brother comes down to cause his own mischief. On December 24 the last brother, Candle Beggar, descends to steal his waxen trophies. On Christmas Day, they reverse their migration. They slowly retreat back to the mountains, again one by one each night, **until January 6th** when they are back in their mountainous home.

Each Yule Lad has their own personality and particular quirk that gives them their name:

**Sheep-Cote Clod, ** (Stekkjastaur) who suckles yews in farmer’s sheep sheds.

**Gully Gawk** (Giljagaur), who steals foam from buckets of cow milk.

**Stubby,** (Stúfur) who’s short and steals food from frying pans.

**Spoon Licker** (Þvörusleikir), who…well…licks spoons.

**Pot-Scraper** (Pottaskefill), who steals unwashed pots and licks them clean.

**Bowl Licker** (Askasleikir), who steals bowls of food from under the bed.

**Door Slammer,** (Hurðaskellir) who slams doors.

**Skyr Gobbler**, (Skyrgámur) who eats up all the skyr, a local Icelandic yogurt.

**Sausage Swiper,** (Bjúgnakrækir) who steals sausages.

**Window Peeper,** (Gluggagægir) who likes to creep outside windows.

**Door Sniffer,** (Gáttaþefur) who has an insatiable appetite for stolen baked goods.

**Meat Hook,**  (Ketkrókur) who steals meat left out(Ketkrókur)—his favorite is smoked lamb.

**Candle Beggar,** (Candle Stealer) who steals candles.

But there’s one thing the Yule Lads do that redeems their naughty behavior. Children leave their shoes on the windowsill on Christmas Eve—if they’re good, the Yule Lads fill the shoes with candy. But if the children are bad, candy is swapped for a raw potato.

#### JÓLASVEINAVÍSUR
A well-known poem “Jólasveinavísur,” written by Jóhannes frá Kötlum and translated by Hallberg Hallmundsson reads as follows:

Let me tell the story
of the lads of few charms,
who once upon a time
used to visit our farms. 

They came from the mountains,
as many of you know,
in a long single file
to the farmsteads below. 

Grýla was their mother
– she gave them ogre milk –
and the father Leppalúdi;
a loathsome ilk. 

They were called the Yuletide lads
– at Yuletide they were due –
and always came one by one,
not ever two by two. 

Thirteen altogether,
these gents in their prime
didn’t want to irk people
all at one time. 

Creeping up, all stealth,
they unlocked the door.
The kitchen and the pantry
they came looking for. 

They hid where they could,
with a cunning look or sneer,
ready with their pranks
when people weren’t near. 

And even when they were seen,
they weren’t loath to roam
and play their tricks – disturbing
the peace of the home.

It’s that time of year again! The light and warmth (by Icelandic standards) of summer have now slipped far from our grasp here in Iceland. The winter darkness is creeping in at a rate that shocks even the most seasoned Icelander. Now is a perfect time to remind ourselves **why we love winter**, the northern lights (aurora borealis). The **darkness that envelopes our isolated volcanic island brings with it optimal conditions** for viewing and photographing the northern lights. In the summer and in the daytime, the daylight renders them invisible, but as the nights grow longer and darker, they become more visible. Getting away from the city helps as well. Red is the rarest of colors when it comes to the northern lights The reason for this is that the color red is so close to the infrared spectra that its hard for the eyes to detect it. ######

### GÓÐAN DAGINN 
Roughly: got-than dai-yinn.

Make sure you pronounce the eth letter, ð, as a softly voiced th. The ever-useful Góðan daginn is literally “good day,” and is the standard greeting all over Iceland. The response is typically Góðan dag—but don’t ask anyone why, nobody knows. If you’re on closer terms with someone, say a friend or classmate, you’ll encounter the more common Saell (to a man) or Sael (to a woman).

 
### HVAÐ HEITIR ÞÚ? ÉG HEITI…
Roughly: Kvath heit-eer thu? Yeh hei-tee

“What’s your name?” or the more archaic and epic-sounding phrase, “What are you called?” And its answer: “I’m called…” An Icelander will usually respond with their first name, and occasionally the last name. Icelanders tend to be rather informal, so they call each other by first name in almost any situation—work, dentist’s office, university.

 

### GAMAN AÐ KYNNAST ÞIG / GAMAN AÐ HITTA ÞIG
Roughly: gah-man ath kyn-nast thig / gah-man ath hih-ta thig

After you just meet someone and introduced yourself, follow up with the gold standard phrase Gaman að kynnast þig: “Good to meet you.” If you bumped into someone you already know at the supermarket, though, use the more familiar Gaman að hitta þig. It basically has the same meaning, except the word hitta is “to meet [up]” with the connotation that you already know the person.

### TAKK FYRIR
Roughly: Tahk fir-ir

This phrase literally means “Thanks for,” and is the most common way to thank someone. You’ll hear it often in the store and on the street. Be sure to add a breath in the takk, like tahhkk. There’s also the more informal takk and the more formalÞakka þér fyrir.

 
### JÁ / NEI
Roughly: jaow / nei

The go-to Yes and No. Icelanders love to say the word já and you’ll hear it just about everywhere. If you really want to sound Icelandic, suck in your breath while you say it. When you’re asking a negative question, use the mutated form Jú. Nei is, simply, “no,” but you can lengthen the word to add emphasis: neiiii.

 

### Gjörðu svo vel
Roughly: Gyur-thu svo vel.

Literally it means “Give you so well,” but to all laymen out there, it’s simply “Here you go.” This phrase I use almost daily in Iceland—when I hand popcorn to my friend or a book to a classmate. This is what a waiter will tell you as he puts down his plate. If you’re talking to more than one person: gerið þið svo vel.

### ÞETTA REDDAST
Roughly: Thehh-ta red-ast

An oft-cited phrase, þetta reddast is difficult to translate exactly. The closest definition may be, “It’ll all work out,” and comes straight to the heart of Icelanders. Life (and the weather) can be rough on this small island, where few crops grow and rainfall is a daily occurrence. But rest assured knowing that, despite the difficulties, things will always work out in the end. It’s become such a symbol that some locals (and foreigners!) have it tattooed onto their arms.

 

### ÉG ÆTLA AÐ FÁ…
Roughly: yeh ait-la ath fao

This phrase is useful all around Reykjavik, and you’ll need it in bakeries, restaurants, cafes, pretty much every place with a menu. It means literally “I intend to take…” and gives a clue into the often direct culture of Icelanders. Locals don’t bother with such pansy sentences like “Could I have…?” They jump right in with the taking—that is, if there is payment involved. Of course, you wouldn’t say Ég ætla að fá…if you’re going to get something for free, like a library book or a gift. That would just be rude.

 
### ÉG TALA EKKI ÍSLENSKU
Roughly: yeh ta-la eh-ki ees-lens-ku

Arguably the first sentence a foreigner learns in Icelandic is Ég tala ekki íslensku, which means literally, “I don’t speak Icelandic.” It became so common that Icelanders jokingly printed the phrase on T-shirts, mugs, and all sorts of souvenirs on Laugavegur streets. After this article, however, hopefully you’ll be able to try out a variant: Ég tala ekki íslensku svo vel, meaning “I don’t speak Icelandic very well.”

### ÉG ELSKA ÞIG
Roughly: yeh el-ska thig

If you’re lucky on your travels to Iceland, you may find this phrase useful. Ég elska þig, is quite literally “I love you.” Follow up with a ég sakna þin“I miss you” to amp up the romance,and throw in ÁstinorElskan(“beloved”) for good measure.

 
### HVAÐ KOSTAR ÞAÐ?
Roughly: kvath ko-star thath?

There’s no culture of bargaining in Iceland—what you see is what you get. If you want to ask the price for something, you’ll want to try this phrase: “How much does cost?” Það is a tricky one for first-time learners. Make sure you pronounce the þ as an “th” unvoiced, and the ð as a “th” voiced. This sentence becomes quite useful in flea markets especially, when the price isn’t always immediately apparent.

 

### BLESS BLESS / SJÁUMST
Roughly: bless bless / see-owmst

Saying goodbye in Icelandic is usually a bless bless, which comes from the formal vertu blessaður (to a man) vertu blessuð (to a woman). The phrases date back to older Christian days, when it was common to see someone off with a blessing. If you’re talking to your peers, classmates or coworkers, a simple sjáumst(see you) will do.

### TAKK FYRIR SÍÐAST
Roughly: tahk fir-ir see-thast

Say you meet up with a friend after a wild night of partying, or a simple dinner gathering. Customarily, Icelanders whip up this sentence: takk fyrir síðast, literally, “thanks for last [time].”

 

### FRÁBÆRT / FLOTT / FÍNT
Roughly: fraow-baert / flohtt / feent

These three words you use quite often in Icelandic—and they all mean “great” or “wonderful” or “nice.”But while Frábærtis closer to “awesome,” with a burst of emphasis, flott andfínt have a calmer feeling. Got an ‘A’ on your language test? Frábært! Caught the latest Marvel movie? Flott!

 

### PHRASE JUST FOR FUN: ÁFRAM MEÐ SMJÖRIÐ
Roughly: aow-vram meth smee-ur-ith

Icelandic has loads of colloquial and fun turns of phrase, which usually speak somehow to the culture or the weather. This particular sentence literally means “on with the butter,” but is an idiom to say: “move your butt, stop dilly-dallying, carry on!”







***Frábært! Nú talar þú smá íslensku!***
***Takk fyrir, Bless bless!***

ICELANDIC PHRASES YOU’LL NEED TO THRIVE DURING YOUR TRAVELS IN ICELAND

### ELVES, TROLLS & GHOSTS, OH MY!
 

Icelanders’ belief in elves is well-documented. The Atlantic, BBC, the Guardian, and numerous travel blogs have published stories on construction workers who halt their work in progress. Elves, the workers claim, cause accidents if construction disturbs their otherworldly homesteads.

But **magical beings in Iceland** don’t stop there. There’s a whole host of **supernatural creatures** in the Icelandic mythic repertoire. In the olden days, cold winters and black nights were perfect breeding grounds for **all sorts of fantastical fables**. Some scholars believe they started as warnings or scary stories for children; others as explanations of Iceland’s often perilous topography. **Read on to learn more!**

 

### HULDUFÓLK
Huldufólk or “Hidden People” are humanoid beings who live in large boulders. Some Icelanders agree that they are s**ynonymous with elves**; others, a completely different species. Certain magical areas, called** Álagablettur, are enchanted dwelling places for the Huldufólk.** They are invisible and rarely show themselves to humans; when they do appear, they have brown hair, nondescript green clothes, and are about the same size as humans. Apparently, they are also averse to Christian symbols and electricity–so if you’d rather not meet one, bring along a cross necklace!

### TROLLS
Legends of trolls, gigantic monsters of nature, are plentiful in Iceland. **Trolls represent nature at its most powerful and raw**; greedy, terrifying, and huge, like mountains themselves, with fierce faces, if a bit unintelligent. They are **creatures of darkness**, and a touch of sunlight will transform them into stone instantly. Sea stacks off of Iceland’s coast are often linked to the bodies of trolls, caught in the sunlight and frozen in time. The Vík basalt rock formations are such frozen trolls. Another legend surrounds Dimmuborgir,** the lava field with towers of black lava near Lake Mývatn.** Local legends speak of a major troll revelry here; the trolls partied so much they fell into a drunken stupor and were caught with the sun came out. Now all that remains of the once-proud giants are black, crumbling towers.

 

### GRÝLA & GRÓF
Some trolls are so famous they have names. **Gróf is a friendly female troll (or ogress)**, who once befriended a young girl Siggi. Another troll appearing in childhood tales is** Grýla, a fearsome and ancient ogress**. She gave birth to the thirteen Yule Lads who cause mischief around Christmastime every year. She has married three times, dispatching of two of her husbands because they bored her. Grýla has hooves for feet, thirteen tails, and–of course–an insatiable hunger for naughty children.

### WATER-DWELLERS
Several cryptids haunt the waters around Iceland. The **Lagarfljót monster** lives in the lake Lagarfljót beside the town of Egilsstaðir. In the West Fjords, an **evil troll** lives on the banks of a small lake. The legend goes that the troll appears as a white horse; but if you dare to ride the horse, you’ll be stuck to it and dragged underneath to a watery grave. The only way to tell it apart from a real horse is by its hooves, which are backward. There have been claims of sea monsters all around Iceland: **the Shore Lad, Sea Man, Shell Monster**. The **Lyngbakur is a whale troll** that devours fishermen. There’s even a museum in the West Fjords, **the Skrímslasetrið**, that delves into the cultural history and eyewitness accounts of Iceland’s sea monsters.

### GHOSTS
Icelandic folklore is packed with tales of ghosts: **undead beings** that haunt stables, rivers, houses, graveyards, hillsides–basically anywhere. They appear widespread in **sagas**(notably Glámr in Gretti’s Saga), as well as in modern lore. Ghost tales are stories of unrequited love affairs, children who died too young, heroes cloven in two. **Ghosts of drowned men** wear damp swimwear, young boys wear scarlet-red sweaters. A **móri** is a male ghost who wears a rusty shirt and a **skotta**, a female ghost whose hat is bent backward. Toddlers who were left out to die appear crying, singing to their living mothers, wrapped in swaddled blankets. Stop by the **Ghost Center, a museum in Stokkseyri** devoted to hauntings all over the island, to learn more.

 

### SÆMUNDR FRÓÐI
There are many warlocks and witches in Icelandic folklore, but none so renowned as Sæmundur Sigfússon fróði. “Saemund the Learned” was a semi-legendary scholar, who lived in the 11th and 12th centuries. He studied the Dark Arts and spent his days tracking the Devil. One story relates how, when he graduated from the **Black School**, Saemund sewed a leg of lamb into his cloak. As he was about to leave, the Devil reached to grab him but snatched the leg instead. Saemund slipped away to safety.

### TILBERI OR SNAKKUR
Tilberi, or Snakkur, are worm-like creatures,** born of witchcraft in order to steal milk**. The recipe to creature a Tilberi is complex and precise: a witch must steal a rib from a recently buried body early on Whitsunday. Pluck gray wool from the shoulders of a widow’s sheep, and then twist the gray wool around the bone. For the next three Sundays, **the witch will spit **sanctified wine on the bundle during communion. After each spit, the tilberi will shudder, until at last springing into life at the end of the third Sunday.** Then the witch sends the tilberi to suck milk from cows and ewes in secret**. The tilberi jumps on the udder and once full of milk will cry out “Full belly, Mommy” or “Churn lid off, Mommy.” The witch will then collect the tilberi and it **will vomit the milk into her butter churn**. The only way to kill a tilberi is to send it to the mountain to collect lambs’ droppings in three pastures. The tilberi will die because **evil creatures cannot tolerate the number three** (naturally).

 

### YULE LADS & THE YULE CAT
The** Yule Lads** are thirteen mischievous trolls who cause trouble around Christmas. We’ve covered them extensively in a previous post, which you can read here. The Yule Cat is a humongous cat that lurks around the countryside with the Yule Lads. It will devour anyone who hasn’t received any new clothes on Christmas Eve. ### EXPLORE WILD ICELAND IN JANUARY

You might not think of Iceland as a prime destination in January, but don’t let the island’s northerly reputation fool you. Sure, you might not have the long idle days of midsummer or the abundant wildlife of spring,** but winter in Iceland still has a lot to offer**. As Scandinavian countries go, **the temperature is quite mild, with averages of just around 0°C in Reykjavik. **Occasional snowfalls transform the city into a quiet, sleepy village with plenty of concerts and cozy nights. The landscape beyond also turns into a winter wonderland of crystal fields, frozen waterfalls, blue ice caves, and pristine icebergs. It’s **the perfect place to enjoy a cup of cocoa while admiring dreamy and charming snow-capped scenery**.


### WHAT’S THE WEATHER LIKE?
Naturally,** pay attention to the weather **— **it’s still January, with blustery winds and the odd hailstorm.** Check the** Icelandic Met Office forecasts daily**. Dress warmly — make sure you bring **ample layers, wool underwear, a windbreaker, hats, and gloves,** especially if you’re venturing out into the countryside. Western Iceland is considerably windier **than in town or near the eastern mountains. Typically, Reykjavik enjoys more favorable conditions as it’s right on the coast.

Because the country is so close to the Arctic Circle, **in winter days are short and nights are long.** That said,** the hours of daylight change rapidly over the course of the month**. On January 1, the sun rises around 11:20 am and sets around 3:45 pm; on January 31, the sunrise is at 10:11 am and the sunset is at 5:15 pm. That’s a rapid increase from 4.5 hours at the beginning of the month to 7 hours in the end. And even though days are brief, they are quite beautiful.** The sun seems to hover just above the horizon most of the time**. The light, a soft blue-gold sheen, makes for the **perfect lighting for photographers**.

### LOW SEASON DOESN’T MEAN NO SEASON

 

January is the heart of winter and is **considered Iceland’s low season, despite the surge of tourism in recent years**. Tourists, which usually swarm the streets in the summertime, number a lot less. Sites like the Golden Circle and Blue Lagoon, which normally suffer from overcrowding from May to August, can be almost bare with only a handful of tourists. **The lack of crowds and low airfare make winter a perfect season to travel to Iceland.** Hotels and car rentals also price out lower, which is great for budget travelers. You may travel around the countryside and have the only room booked for the whole bed and breakfast. Even so, it's always **a good idea to book your hotels before your arrival,** as space is also a consideration in a destination as popular as Iceland.

 

### RENTING A WINTER-READY CAR
Driving in winter is always challenging, and especially in Iceland with its fierce winds and deep snows. However, **if you want to get out of Reykjavik beyond the Golden Circle, it’s necessary to rent a car.** Ride in a **4WD with a driver experienced with icy conditions**. If you’d rather not deal with the weather, we **recommend hiring a guide or a tour service for day trips**. There are hundreds of guided trips you can go straight from Reykjavik. Some are 2-3 days and take your way out to the eastern edge of the island.

### WHAT IS THERE TO DO IN JANUARY?
There is a wealth of activities in Iceland specifically geared for wintertime. This is the** perfect time to head out into the dark countryside for a chance to glimpse the elusive northern lights**. Go skiing at the** ski resort in the Bláfjöll mountains**. Explore the **deep blue of ice caves at the Vatnajökull** ice cap. Hit the** slopes with dog sledding and snowmobiling**. Be aware that wildlife, like puffins and whales, is almost nonexistent so if you’re an animal lover, best to wait until summer.

If your goal is to stay in frost-tipped Reykjavik, fear not—**there is also lots to do in town.** The city is picturesque, with colorful houses covered in snow. You can **go ice skating, or catch a band in one of the many bars on Laugavegur Street.** Hanging out at a local pub is a great way to meet locals, Icelanders, and ex-pats alike, most of whom speak English. And remember those short days I mentioned? **Short days mean long nights, which in Reykjavik means a thriving and crazy nightlife.** Icelanders love to party; they head out around 11 pm and don’t come back well until morning.

### JANUARY HOLIDAYS AND FESTIVALS
A** quiet winter wouldn’t be complete without loud and exciting festivals to break up the calm** every so often. **Þrettándinn, the last of the Christmas season** celebrated on January 6, is a time of bonfires and fireworks. the **dark Music Days **showcases contemporary music, in the coming 2017 year on January 26-28. It will mostly be held at the cultural center Harpa in downtown Reykjavik, with one organ concert taking place at the cathedral Hallgrímskirkja in the city center. To get to know real Icelanders, invite yourself to a **traditional Þorrablót**, around January 20th, **a festival when locals drink and eat local delights like ram’s testicles, rotten shark, smoked lamb, and blood pudding**.
