Ditch The Beaten Path Tours!

You’ll quickly come to learn that Iceland has ton of opportunities for adventure available. During your research phase, it’s easy to become a bit overwhelmed with all the options, multiple providers of those options and finding the optimal place to do the tour! We’re going to narrow a few options down for you that definitely go against the grain, off the path and head first into adventure. As we’re an off-roading tour company ourselves, we’ve been able to seek out and experience other tours like ours that offer up a similar thrill! So let’s get into it – here’s our top 5 adventure tours in Iceland that get you far from tour buses and closer to the action!

5) Volcanic Veins Lava Caving Tour

To begin, lava caving is definitely making our list! It’s an experience that offers up a totally unique take on exploring the landscape of a new place. Since Iceland sits directly on the boundary of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, it has a high concentration of volcanic activity rumbling below its surface. On the island, there are 30 active volcanic systems, of which 13 have erupted since Iceland’s settlement in 874 AD. If you’re up for the journey, your guide will take you into the underworld and share with you the importance of caves to Icelandic history. The network of caves served as crucial shelters for people and animals over harsh winters that ultimately served as unique safe havens. Even in present day, Icelanders still use caves as sheds, barns or for sheep. The tour itself doesn’t require an exceptional degree of athleticism, if you can maneuver yourself well and don’t mind the dark then you’re alright to participate. In the winter months, the caves are dazzled with spectacular ice formations that bring another element of awe to the tour.

4) Fimmvorduhals Hiking Tour

Next up is a popular hiking trail that even the most seasoned of hiker would be amped to take on. The Fimmvörðuháls Hiking Trail (24-30 km) between Skógar and Þórsmörk is one of the most traversed trails in Iceland and offers a challenging trek in versatile terrain and breathtaking views. Depending on what tour you take, the duration can last from 1-2 days, while most can complete the trail in 8-10 hours. The trail leads you over the Fimmvörðuháls pass, between the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull ice caps, then down the other side to Þórsmörk and passes over the lava fields from the 2010 eruption from Eyjafjallajökull volcano. This is an incredible way to fully immerse yourself in the Icelandic nature, get to know a true local who ventures well beyond the regular tourist tracks and find some peace and serenity. You can complete this hike on your own, but to take the stress and planning aspect out of your hands so you can truly enjoy it – I recommend booking with a small group tour.

3) Landmannalaugar Super Jeep Tour

This place is most often referred to as the ‘pearl of the highlands’ as it is truly unique and the finest of experiences for nature lovers. Landmannalaugar is situated in a valley between colourful mountains at the dark edge of the rhyolite lava field Laugahraun. An added bonus is that there are many hot and cold springs that converge to create an perfect bathing warm brook. The tours mostly take you for a thrilling and incredibly scenic ride into the highlands, a short hike through the steaming lava fields then bathing in the most beautiful natural bath you’ll ever experience. Okay, call us biased – but we think our tours are pretty great! 1) Thorsmork Highlands Super Jeep Tour

Introducing… The Valley of The Thunder God THOR. No really – this is his valley. Yet another super jeep excursion recommendation as we Icelanders truly can’t get enough of them! This tour comes in at #1 as it takes place in one of the most stunning regions in Iceland. While Landmannalaugar is the pearl, the Thorsmork Highlands is the diamond (in our humble opinion). Thorsmork is situated inland from the Southern Coast of Iceland and is a mountainous region capped with glaciers containing mesmerizing canyons, hidden waterfalls, and awe-inspiring mountain top views. This tour allows you to venture deep into the Thorsmork Highlands by crossing off-road trails, rough terrain, and glacier rivers. Once you arrive in the interior, you’ll step out for a short or longer hike depending on your preference and arrive at some beautiful view points and your local guide will also take you to a few additional local favourite spots. It’s a trip not to be missed!
