Summer Streets are BACK!

. By quadsafari.

After what seemed like a never-ending winter, summer is finally HERE!

We are beyond excited to hear that as of this Sunday May 1st, our buzzing main street called Laugavegur will officially be closed off to motor traffic! We’ve done this in previous years and the transition to closed streets has been given the title of ‘Summer Streets’. To us Icelanders, this means more than just pedestrian dominated streets closed to vehicles. This means much longer days with more sunlight allowing us to stay out in the wilderness longer and enjoy a beer (or two) on a patio outside. Anything about 0 degrees Celsius is fair game patio weather here in Iceland! We happily welcome our Arctic Midnight Sun!

This initiative by the city is known in Icelandic as Sumargötur. It can be a bit of a controversial event as some businesses believe that they lose money due to the closure of the roads to vehicle traffic. We agree with the majority in saying that it’s a wonderful thing to have pedestrian only streets as we all know how popular downtown Reykjavík is in the summer. With an increase in tourism expected and evident so far this year, we’re excited to welcome aspiring adventurers and travelers to the beating heart of Iceland, Reykjavík city.
